Blog 7: Chance to my study program.
The program of design career in the university of Chile is as follows. The first year is a “common plan” between graphic designer and industrial designers
This year is principally about conceptualization and for learning basic theoretical knowledge like history, geometry, perception, anthropology among others themes. Also the program considers the learning of basic skills like how to use some softwares like illustrator and photoshop, among other basics for design, in addition to other general requirements like English, maths and physics.
Each year we have a central course called “project” or “workshop” where the students develop different semi-professional projects, here we learn by doing and that is complemented with theoretical and practical knowledge gained by other specialization courses.
The workload in my experience is high, and I think that is absolutely necessary to improve that because, in my opinion, never the workload in the university should be higher than defined for the labor market, but that is how it is working today.
About faculty facilities, the university is in debt, and actually it is assumed by the directors and they are looking to solve these problems with some improvement and expansion projects, but the real challenge is finding funding.
Some other things that are in debt, and I want it to change is the access to esencial laboratories, technology and labs that we don’t have today, like printing laboratory, 3D print machine in good conditions among others work spaces that whether there are in other universities with similar programs. One of the most important problems in a pandemic was the access to technology and software, some of which we lose because the university doesn't pay the licence. I think that studying at the University of Chile is an enriching experience but there is necessary more inversion in quality spaces for the students and learning.
